Dr. Brett D. Story, DVM, DACVO, graduated with a major in Biology from the University of Central Florida in Orlando before earning his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University. His early work at UCF centered on marine biology and sea turtle research through the UCF Marine Turtle Research Group.
During his time at Auburn, he developed a strong interest in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Tay-Sachs disease, which led to a passion for ophthalmology. His scientific focus includes the perception of the world by animals and the implications of retinal disease across species. Given the anatomical similarities between human and animal eyes, a significant portion of his research focuses on translational models of human retinal and neurodegenerative diseases.
Following graduation, he completed a general internship at the University of Florida and a specialty ophthalmology internship at Long Island Veterinary Specialists.
He was then accepted into the highly competitive and internationally respected comparative ophthalmology residency program at the University of California, Davis (2021–2025), where he focused on advancing surgical techniques and improving ocular comfort and vision in animals.
Dr. Story’s professional interests include ophthalmic pathology, neuro-ophthalmology, and various aspects of ophthalmic surgery. He has authored and co-authored multiple peer-reviewed scientific publications involving ocular and neurodegenerative research. In 2025, he became a board-certified Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.
Having benefited from exceptional mentorship throughout his training, he remains dedicated to mentoring others and is passionate about lecturing to veterinarians and scientists alike.
Outside of work, Brett enjoys running, hiking, water sports, board sports, and fishing, as well as spending time with his significant other, Peyton. He also shares his home with a cat named Leo and a tortoise named Ron Swanson.
